The implication was evident, since the statement is only appropriate to subsist a disbelief in a deity — toward any other purpose, the comment is meaningless, as it proves nothing beyond its being mentioned. Regardless of what religion is responsible for, God may still very well exist, and any means to manifest an intimacy between Mankind and Creator is justified by mere virtue of its end.
Richard Dawkins didn’t tell you this?

Religion on a completely personal level (and no further) is perfectly acceptable and should be protected as any other freedom. However, while religion clearly holds the leading torch in evolution denial, contraception demonizing, female subjugation, rioting over cartoons, mass child-molestation, mass child-indoctrination, honor killings, and hatred for gays, it is safe to say that it is indeed hindering the progress of humanity. Religion has evolved only subsequent to dissent.

You’re mistaken. Modest religions such as Buddhism are more concerned with social progress than conquest. A lot of churches were the initial stimulus to altruistic virtues and volunteer programs. I’ll concede, many religions have had their share of historical evils, but it’s quite rash (and useless) to express contempt toward an imaginary homogeneous umbrella term “religion.”
I think people that hate (you) are what hold humanity back.

As horribly as that douche down there put it, Dawkins did take a very narrow minded approach to the topic. There is rarely a sole cause of twisted beliefs or ideologies. They spawn from many things and the guy at the end said it best.

Read slowly: By definition, religion is the physical intermediary between Man and Supernatural. If God exists, His Will is, inevitably, social progress, as revealed through religion. Accordingly, religion is indeed social progress, IF God exists. Religion can ONLY exist as a hindrance if God DOES NOT exist. So: the statement “religion is a hindrance” presupposes the non-existence of God — which begs the question: what’s your point? Surely this isn’t your argument for atheism?
